Wild and rugged
This species of St Johnswort grows in
very harsh conditions of extreme cold
in winter, flooding in spring,
and very dry in summer.
The red buds (after blooming)
are picked in the fall,
even after the first frost,
when the plant itself turns
red with hypercin.
